Thorpes farm being ‘Black marinated'
Thorpes farm being ‘Black marinated'

Monochrome photograph, © South Lanarkshire Council Museums Service,
from an album compiled by Lieutenant Robert Cotton Money (see 2008.142), with the inscription ‘Thorpes farm being ‘Black marinated’ in the foreground relics of German equipment' [Capt Rose's diary of 4 Oct refers to "The men call the high explosive shells ‘Coal scuttles’, as they give off a heavy black smoke." Possibly 'Black marinated' is an alternative for the same shells.]
