Ospisdale brooch
Ospisdale brooch

Black & white photograph of the Ospisdale brooch, a typical Viking "tortoise" brooch of bronze with decorative silver wire in an elaborate design. Found at Ospisdale in 1830 with the remains of a steatite urn. Bought by the Museum of Antiquities from Mrs Lyon (should this be Miss Lyon?? EQ) in 1933 and 1950. The brooch is oval, 2" x 3.5" approx. It is similar to two brooches found at Reay and two from Longhills, Westerseat, Wick. NMS reference no IL377 EK43. A copy of this photograph is included in Mrs Bridget MacKenzie's booklet 'The Vikings in East Sutherland (10068).
