Mr & Mrs J Cumming

B/w laser photocopy of photo of a man and woman with a basket on the ground between them and row of cottages in the background, probably Embo. Hard to see what they are doing but possibly baiting lines. On reverse: " Mr & Mrs J Cumming Mizpah Cottage?". Quality of copy is poor. On same sheet as 2007.181.05.

Comments:
The Mr and Mrs James Cumming living at Mizpah Cottage, Embo (9 Front Street)in 1890 would have been James Cumming (Born 1834 and died 1923) and known as "Shamie" and wife Jessie Cumming (nee Ross) and known as "Jessie aigh Merrie" (born 1838 and died 1918). They were my maternal great grandparents. They do appear to be baiting long lines in this photo but Shamie was said to have been a trader but his siblings and sons were fishermen.
Now that the 1911 Scottish Census results have just been released I see that in that year this James (aged 76) and his wife Jessie Cumming (aged 70) were then living at 3 King Street, Embo and that he gave his occupation as "Retired Grocer". They also report that they were both born in Embo, had been married for 51 years and had 10 children, 8 of whom were then still alive.
Staying with them at the same address was their youngest daughter Barbara Ann (Babie Ann) Mackay and her husband Donald Mackay. Donald and Barbara ran a successful family grocery business from this premises. Barbara Ann was then aged 25 and Donald 32 years. They had been married for 7 years then and had no children and in fact remained childless.
The Census also shows that on the census date (2/4/1911)9 Front Street (Mizpah Cottage) was occupied by James and Jessie's oldest son Donald and his wife Annie Cumming and their children.
All of people in these two houes are recorded as being bi-lingual (Gaelic & English), except the youngest child at 9 Front Street who is shown as Gaelic speaking only.

Many thanks for passing on this information - Administrator
