Historylinks Year: 1911Letter from Andrew Carnegie
Envelope and letter from Andrew Carnegie, Skibo Castle, Dornoch, Sutherland, 1911 June 23 to Scottish poet Robert Burns' great-granddaughter. The text of the letter is: "Sorry we found it necessary to start for the North early next Morning which prevent our intended call upon you & your mother. I was sorry indeed to hear of your Father's death which I did in New York but it came again to me with a shock in Dumfries as I had forgotten for the moment. My kind regards to your dear old Mother - glad she has you to watch over her, that one comfort." Accompanied by original stamped envelope, embossed "Skibo" on back flap. Addressed by Carnegie to: "Miss Jean G. Burns Brown/191 High St/Dumfries". Soiled, worn and lightly stained. Docketed, likely by the recipient, at left margin.
JEAN ARMOUR BURNS BROWN (1864-1937) was the great-granddaughter of Scottish poet ROBERT BURNS and his wife, Jean Armour Burns. Her father, THOMAS BROWN, who had married JANE EMMA BURNS in 1857, died in 1911.
