Scarlet dress tunic with yellow collar and epaulettes and white piping. The epaulettes are marked 1 STL. The silver coloured buttons have the Sutherland crest of a cat above a crown and the motto SANS PEUR. There are eight buttons down the front, three each on the flaps at the front, three each on the flaps at the back with two above, one on each epaulette and three on each cuff (30 in all). The right sleeve has a badge of two crossed union flags beneath a crown, three stripes, and five pentagonal badges and a white diamond just above the cuff. The left sleeve has two crossed rifles above the cuff. The tunic is lined with cream wool.
This forms part of the uniform of a Colour Sergeant Instructor of 1st Sutherland Highland Rifle Volunteers between 1881 and 1908. It belonged to William Bethune of Bonar Bridge.
