Sutherland Highland Rifle Volunteers Uniform kilt

Kilt in dark blue and green Black Watch tartan (42nd or Government tartan), with four rosettes in green silk (one has lost its ribbons). Two of these are on the right hand side of the flat kilt front, the other two are near the end of the pleated area and therefore also on the right hand side.

This forms part of the uniform of a Colour Sergeant Instructor of 1st Sutherland Highland Rifle Volunteers between 1881 and 1908. It belonged to William Bethune of Bonar Bridge. [picture #392 for Northern Times article on the donation of William Bethune's uniform by his grandson Dennis Bethune]
