The Historylinks Archive

The Historylinks Archive provides access to the complete museum collection of 15,491 objects. The website was launched on 1st June 2008 as the 'Historylinks Image Library', a development by Cromarty based Plexus Media from their popular website for public access to community photograph collections. Complementary to opening access to the multitude of objects held in the museum store, the Image Library permitted users to submit comments of factual or social history importance, which once accepted and published were subsequently incorporated in the museum catalogue. To date the total number of comments providing valuable feedback, incorporated in the museum catalogue, is 2,066.

In 2020 with the Covid 19 'lock-down' museums were encouraged to enhance their virtual presence and the museum was able to obtain grant funding for a significant upgrade of the Image Library. Of particular importance this enabled more extensive direct-linking of over 320 pdf files, of complete document bundles/publications, and introduce direct-links to museum videos. Plexus Media provided full co-operation in completing the necessary design and software revision to enable the launch of the successor 'Historylinks Archive' within three-weeks!

To assist in accessing the Archive, 'Tools' provides access to recent updates and advanced search facilities. 'Albums' shows the complete collection by cataloguing 'keywords'. Shortcut access to various photograph, document and object collections is available from 'Groups'. Once a selection has been made within a 'Group' there is a facility to 'turn the page', using the left and right arrowheads adjacent to the the Cat No. to view all photographs, documents or objects within that collection. (Groups/ Film) provides direct access to museum legacy videos.

Whilst Heritage Society talks are routinely recorded, due to the large size of the mp3 files (c 40 - 60 minutes duration), hitherto it has not been possible to provide direct links from the website to the content of past talks, which often provide hidden gems of social history. With the general advance in technology, in the final quarter of 2024 two remedial projects were launched. Where possible PowerPoint presentations were acquired from speakers, to enable synchronisation of their slides with museum mp3 recordings, to produce videos. Where the passage of time prevented acquisition of PowerPoint files, the museum has subscribed to an application to transcribe mp3 files to text. The two projects are active, with growing collections in 'Groups/DHS Talks Video' and 'Groups/DHS Talks pdf'.

At all times when viewing images you can leave your own comments using the form at the foot of each page. In this way we hope to verify information and add data to the museum catalogue. All comments are subject to approval prior to publication

Historylinks acknowledges that copyright of many images in the museum collection rests with the originator or publisher. All images displayed in the archive are for the purposes of contributing to social history in the Museum’s defined area of interest, the boundaries of Dornoch Parish, and principles of ‘Fair Use’ as defined in UK Copyright Regulations are paramount. The superimposed ‘HISTORYLINKS’ at the foot of each image is indicative that there should be no unilateral copying of an image prior to contacting Historylinks Museum. If anyone owns the copyright of an image and wishes to object to its use, please contact the Museum immediately and the image will be suspended pending the outcome of negotiation as to ‘Fair Use’.
